South Midland Water Transport Limited was formed in April 1996 from the assets of the former South Midland Water Transport Company and the fleet of boats owned and operated under the name of Captain Cargo Limited. Together they aim to ensure that the history of "Our ancient industry" is not forgotten while also promoting the environmental value of the canals in relieving pressure from Britain's overcrowded roads. Commercial Carrying on the waterways of Britain is dead, NEVER! We are the proof.
SMWTLtd operate primarily as authorised coal merchants. In this guise they deliver solid fuels to waterside properties by working narrowboat. Deliveries are also made to other boats and to non-waterside properties by lorry. Regular trips are made to keep the Thames lockeepers stocked up throughout the year. Some people view this as almost a novelty service. The stereotype of coal and coal merchants is one of dirty great lorries delivering foul black stuff. Therefore, the site of a working narrowboat with shiny paintwork and gleaming brasses is seen as something special. To find out more about this service, get in touch.
WE ADVERTISE YOUR COMPANY Another aspect of their business are commercial loads. These are often for the purpose of advertising the customers company. Often banners proclaiming the customers name and logo are carried on the boat and it is likely that photographs of the boat containing the banner will appear in the waterways press. Once, a picture of a boat being operated by Captain Cargo Limited (SMWTLtd's predecessor) appeared on the front page of the Independent newspaper.
